Filtration is the process of isolating solids from a liquid or gas using a filter.

Filtration has played a role in all of these everyday products:

Coffee filter

Coffee filters help separate coffee grounds or tea leaves from the water used to make coffee.

Automotive filter

Automotive (oil) filters remove contaminants from used oil, as your car’s oil pump pushes the oil through the filter.

Air filter

Air filters use fine filters with activated carbon to allow air to pass through while capturing dust and pet hair.

Pasta strainer

Pasta strainers allow one to separate starchy water from pasta, because the pasta does not pass through the holes of the strainer.

Recycling

Recycling processes make wide use of filtration to remove contaminants such as metal pieces, paper, wood from plastic feed.

Aquariums

Mechanical fiilters in aquariums remove floating wastes from circulating water. These wastes if unremoved would decay into ammonia.
